The James Henry Thomas Scholarship is a selective scholarship for high school seniors and current college students. The scholarship is awarded in the amount of $500 or more per academic year and will be sent directly to the requested institution. All applications are due no later than June 1st to be considered for the upcoming fall semester. Reapplicants must apply each year.
Scholarship Eligibility:
To be eligible for the James Henry & Vernell Currie Thomas Scholarship, the student must meet the following criteria:
- Be a North Carolina permanent resident (college/university does not have to be in NC)
- Be a high school senior or current college student
- Be 17-23 years of age
Application Process:
For FIRST TIME APPLICANTS, the following information is required:
- A transcript from current high school or college/university
- A college/university acceptance letter or current college/university class schedule
- 2 letters of recommendation from an academic professional or community leader (see link and more instructions below)
- Proof of FAFSA completion
- An essay that includes:
- A personal introduction
- Your involvement in extracurricular activities and/or community service
- What obtaining this scholarship would mean to you/your family
- Your academic and career goals
The essay is to be 2 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, with 1 inch margins.
For REAPPLICANTS , the following information is required:
- A current transcript from college/university showing that you are in "Good Academic Standing"
- A current college/university class schedule
- 2 letters of recommendation from an academic professional or community leader (see link and more instructions below)
- Proof of FAFSA completion
- An essay that includes:
- Pros and cons of your most recent college year
- Accomplishments/involvement from your most recent college year
- Goals for the upcoming school year
- Your current career goals
The essay is to be 2 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, with 1 inch margins.

Recipient Information:
All recipients will be required to:
- Attend a virtual Meet and Greet
- Submit a digital, professional head-shot to be displayed on the website and other published materials
- Submit a biography (totaling 5 sentences) to be displayed on the website and other published materials
